You are invited to a professional study trip to Montenegro, organised in cooperation with Oliver Tourism Agency. Montenegro offers outstanding examples of engineering achievements in road infrastructure, connecting the coastal area with the mountainous hinterland. The programme has been designed for civil and transport engineers, with a focus on historical and contemporary road sections as well as active construction sites in Montenegro.
MONTENEGRO
Departure: 10 October 2025 at 19:00
Number of participants: 45
Duration: 6 days
EXCURSION PROGRAMME
DAY 1 (Friday, 10 October 2025)
SLOVENIA – CROATIA – MONTENEGRO
Departure at 19:00 from the outer platform of the Mlinska bus station in Maribor. An overnight drive with rest stops along the way. We will arrive in Tivat in the early morning hours of the following day.
DAY 2 (Saturday, 11 October 2025)
TIVAT – BUDVA
In the town of Tivat, located on the Bay of Kotor, we will conduct a professional visit to the Porto Montenegro marina. Built on the site of a former military shipyard, the marina offers 250 berths for vessels up to 120 metres in length and represents a reference example of the transformation of a military complex into modern port infrastructure. Water depths at the berths (4 to 8 metres) allow safe use by larger vessels as well.
The project presentation and guided tour will be hosted by the contractor and marina operator Porto Montenegro, who will introduce participants to the key technical, organisational and development aspects of the complex. Check-in to rooms. Dinner and overnight stay.
Accompanying programme: a boat excursion around the Bay of Kotor with views of selected natural and historical landmarks – the Island of Flowers, the island of Mamula, former Yugoslav People's Army military facilities, the Blue Cave, and the artificial island of Our Lady of the Rocks.
DAY 3 (Sunday, 12 October 2025)
CETINJE
After breakfast, a professional visit to the former capital of Montenegro – Cetinje – where we will examine the influence of its historical urban layout on the development of the road network. Special emphasis will be placed on the 500-year impact of historical periods on the city's architecture.
The professional segment will continue with a visit to the old Austro-Hungarian road (1878) connecting Cetinje with Lovćen, which represents an example of historical road engineering and the integration of challenging mountain terrain into road infrastructure. Return to Budva. Dinner and overnight stay.
Accompanying programme: visit to the palace of King Nikola, ethnographic and history museum, visit to the tunnel and staircase leading to the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, drive along the new road section to Njeguši, short stop for photography of the Bay of Kotor.
DAY 4 (Monday, 13 October 2025)
PODGORICA
After breakfast, we will travel to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, where the professional segment includes a visit to the Millennium Bridge, one of Podgorica's most recognisable landmarks, designed with the involvement of engineer Marjan Pipenbaher. The bridge represents an important example of a contemporary engineering solution in an urban environment. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
Accompanying programme: a visit to the Šipčanik wine cellar, exterior views of the court of King Nikola I Petrović, a visit to the "Niagara" waterfall near Podgorica, a stop at the bridge and embankment on Lake Skadar, and a panoramic drive to Petrovac na moru with photography at the St. Stefan peninsula.
DAY 5 (Tuesday, 14 October 2025)
KOTOR
After breakfast, a professional visit to the cruise pier in Kotor, where the technical specifics of the facility's design and construction will be presented. We will then ascend by gondola to an elevation of 1,316 metres in Lovćen National Park, where we will view the historical road connection designed during the reign of Prince Nikola, known for its unique M-shaped serpentine route.
The professional segment will continue with a visit to the construction site of the road section between Jaz beach and the entrance to Budva (total length 16 km), which involves the construction of five bridges and the reconstruction of the main road M-2. Works are being carried out by construction company Bemax, one of Montenegro's leading contractors specialising in demanding infrastructure projects. Key technological and organisational aspects of modern road infrastructure construction will be presented, along with the project's significance for improving traffic flow and safety in the coastal area.
Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
