Summary. A summary of the expert article from the society's 35th anniversary volume. The full article is available to download below.
The Maribor southern bypass is a continuation of the city's western bypass and, together with it, represents the relocation of the main road G1-1, the former arterial road M3, from the centre of Maribor to its outskirts along the southern edge of the city. Planning dates back to 1996, when it was conceived as the third phase of the western bypass, and the investor DRSC together with the Municipality of Maribor chose the route along the Radvanje stream.
A conceptual project was produced in 2006, and in 2009 a project for the building permit for the section from Lackova road to the extension of Kardeljeva road. Land purchases began in 2010, were halted for several years in 2011, and resumed only in 2019. The whole bypass measures just over 5.5 km and is designed as a four-lane road with a central reservation and numerous bridging structures.
In conclusion the authors stress that the worst solution is precisely not having the bypass, since traffic on Lackova and Streliška streets practically grinds to a halt at peak times. Continuation of construction between Lackova road and the extension of Kardeljeva road was perhaps to begin in 2022. The project was also followed by the society's membership.
