The A5 motorway connects Maribor and Pince on the Slovenian-Hungarian border, links the Pomurje region to the motorway network and carries international traffic towards Hungary. It is part of the 5th European transport corridor, and during design and construction the Pomurje branch was divided into seven sections with a total length of 85.2 km.
It was designed as a grade-separated four-lane road for a design speed of 120 km/h. Between Maribor and Pince there are two interchanges, Dragučova and Dolga vas, and thirteen junctions, with viaducts, bridges, overpasses, underpasses, culverts, covered cuttings and a tunnel along the route. The most demanding sections ran through unfavourable geological conditions, and among the structures the 833 m bridge over the Mura, the longest in the country, stands out.
The first section was opened to traffic in October 2003, while most of the others followed in 2008, when the route to Pince was completed. The individual sections were designed by the companies BPI d.o.o. Maribor, BP Lineal d.o.o. Maribor and GINEX International d.o.o. Nova Gorica.
